Turkeys

Merle turkey came to us in June of 2010, he was picked up as a stray in a local Valley. Merle was severly malnurished and when picking him up at the animal control Mark thought it was doughtful that he would survive the ride home. An emergecy vet visit was scheduled and Merle was OK'd for transport. It took months of isolation and extra fruits and vegtables along with ground flax seeds/water and bananas and a high nutrient turkey food until his feathers grew in and he blossomed.

Merel is much more cautious then Andy, he gets frieghtened easily and will hide his head in the corner until he feels safe. The plan for the fall is to move Merle down to a turkey area with Andy. So far they haven't made friends so seperat areas are called for. We are hoping that with more socialization Merle will become more confident and secure.

Annabel Turkey came to us August 2008 from a woman who had rescued her from a feed store. The bird was the only turkey who wasn't sold so the feed store just put her in the yard to fend for herself.

Thinking that the turkey would be lonely the lady also purchased a chicken for a companion and the two birds became close friends. Problems arose as Annabel started to out-grow her crate home. The woman did not have a safe area for her to live and started searching for a solution.

She contacted Farm Sanctuary who in turn contacted us. We said that we would take both of the birds. After weeks of delays Annabelle arrived but her companion bird did not. It seems the woman had become attached to the chicken and worried that she needed care we couldn't supply. So a very lonely Annabel settled into her new home, How do I know she was lonely? well she paced the fence and clucked softly while searching for her friend.

After a few months we realized that Annabel was a boy so we changed her name to Andy Bell now Andy spends his days with his chicken friends roaming and scratching and gobbling.
