Lucy — before and after

Lucy looked the most beat-up of all the chickens we got in that batch of rescues. Almost all of her feathers were gone. Click on the photos to enlarge them, and then use the arrows to toggle between them. The first one shows her on July 1, 2007, soon after arriving. The second shows her on Christmas Eve, 2007, after almost six months here. Lucy is a regular egg layer, so she spends her morning after breakfast in the coup. One of the interesting things we've learned is that some chickens have a loud labor session when laying eggs. Lucy can be heard for up to an hour during her laying process, at first both the dogs and Dianne would think something was attacking her, but now we understand the sounds. Al will at times pace back and forth outside the coup while she lays only to give a hearty crow when she's done, as if to say " I did it I am a proud Dad today!".
